Paul and Martha Beach are a loving couple, and devout Christians, whose life was turned upside down May 2019 when Paul was diagnosed with ALS at 52 years old. Paul and Martha were both in their early 50’s living and loving their lives together. They had raised Paul’s son and daughter and were dreaming of what their futures would look like when Paul started noticing physical changes that they both attributed to getting older.
As early as 2017 and in 2018 Paul was experiencing sleep apnea, leg cramps, and muscle weakness in both his arms and legs. Martha noticed that Paul's forearms were smaller and in addition to this, Paul thought he may be getting carpal tunnel because he was struggling to button his shirts and tie his ties.
Paul's physical changes, as well as a fall, prompted Martha to take Paul to the hospital to have some tests run and the results changed their lives forever.
Martha will never forget the moment when Paul's Doctor walked into the room and told them that Paul had motor neuron disease (MND), a rare condition that progressively damages parts of the nervous system. This leads to muscle weakness, often with visible wasting. ALS is the most common form of MND.
As an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the area of NeuroScience, and whose grandfather had ALS, Martha knew how serious and devastating her husband's diagnosis was. On the drive home from the Doctor's office Martha was inconsolable.
Once home, Martha explained to Paul what he had been diagnosed with by referring to the 2014 ALS Ice Bucket Challenge they had participated in. Paul's initial reaction was denial, he said, "I don't have that. What else could it be?"
